During July you may have seen
the report from the English press that "Bordeaux has lost 75% of the crop to
mildew." Well, July WAS colder and rainier than usual. But mildew can be, and
was treated at that stage of growth. Our friends, like Paul Pontallier at
Margaux said, "Août fait le moût," which translates loosely as "You
knuckleheads, it is August weather that makes good wine." Indeed, the July
weather of 2007 was similar to the July weather of 2000! I was in Bordeaux last
week. Most of the days were sunny, with one day of downpour. Today Decanter.com
said "The poor summer weather in Bordeaux is likely to see winemakers forced to
add sugar to their wine during fermentation." At the same time, I look at my new
iPhone and it shows a bright yellow sun for Bordeaux Tuesday through Sunday of
this week... What is the real story with the 2007 vintage? Who can give us an
